Main features

  • High-Strength Structural Bonding
  • 75-Minute Gel Window
  • Water-Resistant Bonding Service

Product Description

ARALDITE® 5049 A/B Adhesive is a two-part epoxy laminating system for composite assemblies, including ski and snowboard laminates, archery limbs, and honeycomb core facing. The mixed material has a typical viscosity of 2,800 cP at 25°C and is normally applied as a 0.05-0.10 mm bondline. It cures to a transparent bondline, with heat cure recommended for optimal results; typical cure options range from 60-120 minutes at 60°C to 15-20 minutes at 100°C. The cured adhesive combines documented strength under static and dynamic loading with resistance to water, ice, and tropical conditions. A typical 75-minute gel time at 25°C for a 100 g mass supports controlled positioning during lamination and assembly.

Key features

  • Lamination strength: Documented high strength under static and dynamic loading for composite bonding applications.
  • Controlled heat cure: A 75-minute gel time at 25°C and cure cycles from 60°C to 100°C support process selection.
  • Environmental resistance: Good resistance to water, ice, and tropical conditions.

Applications / Suitable for

  • Ski and snowboard lamination
  • Archery limb lamination
  • Honeycomb core facing

Storage and Handling

Store ARALDITE AY 557 Resin and Hardener HY 5049 in a dry place in their original sealed containers at 2-40°C, protected from direct sunlight. Under these conditions, shelf life is 3 years from the date of manufacture. Material stored below 15.6°C should be conditioned at approximately 15.6-25°C before use.

Bond strength across temperature and water exposure

The results below are typical values from specified aluminum lap-joint tests. They should not be treated as universal joint strength or design allowables for other substrates, preparations, bondlines, or cure conditions.

Temperature-dependent lap shear
Typical lap shear was 16.5 MPa at 20°C, 21.4 MPa at 60°C, 8.9 MPa at 80°C, and 2.8 MPa at 100°C.
ISO 4578; standard aluminum lap joints; adhesive cured 15 minutes at 100°C; load applied 10 minutes after the joint reached the test temperature.
Water-immersion lap shear
Typical lap shear measured 16.5 MPa as prepared and 13.1 MPa after 30 days of immersion in water at 25°C.
ISO 4578; standard aluminum lap-joint test configuration; typical laboratory values only.
