Power Distribution & Wiring

Power distribution harnesses run through some of the most physically constrained space on the aircraft, bundled tightly and routed past components that generate real heat. The materials wrapped around and bonded to that wiring have to hold up to sustained high temperatures, resist chemical exposure, and stay dimensionally stable enough that a bundle wrapped years ago still insulates and identifies correctly during a routine inspection.

This page covers insulating tapes and structural bonding materials used across power distribution harnesses and connector assemblies.

Where This Is Used

Wire Harness Insulation & Bundling

High-temperature insulating tape wrapped around individual conductors and bundled harness trunk lines.

Solder Masking & Process Protection

Polyimide tape used to mask connectors and terminals during high-temperature soldering operations, then cleanly removed.

Connector & Bracket Bonding

Structural adhesives used to secure connector backshells, strain relief hardware, and mounting brackets along the harness route.

Selection Factors

Temperature Range

Dimensional and adhesive stability across the tape or adhesive's full rated range, checked against the harness's actual thermal exposure.

Clean Removal

Low adhesive transfer and residue-free removal, particularly important where tape is used as temporary process masking.

Dielectric Strength

Reliable electrical insulation between adjacent conductors and between conductors and grounded structure.

Width & Format

Tape width matched to the job: narrow formats for individual conductor wrap, wide formats for major trunk lines needing fewer wraps.

Chemical & Flame Resistance

Resistance to fuel, hydraulic fluid, and flame exposure appropriate to the harness's actual routing environment.

Substrate Compatibility

Confirmed bond strength for structural adhesives across the connector, bracket, and housing materials actually used.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is polyimide tape used instead of a more common vinyl or cloth electrical tape?

General-purpose vinyl and cloth tapes aren't rated for the sustained high temperatures found near aircraft power distribution and engine-adjacent wiring, and can soften, degrade, or leave adhesive residue at those temperatures. Polyimide film tape like 3M 5413 stays dimensionally stable well beyond what those general-purpose tapes can handle, which is why it's the default for aerospace harness work rather than a specialty upgrade.

How do I choose the right width of insulating tape?

Narrower widths give more precise control for wrapping individual conductors or small connector components, while wider formats cover major trunk lines and structural wiring bundles in fewer wraps, which saves installation time and simplifies later maintenance access. The choice generally comes down to the diameter and criticality of what's being wrapped rather than a single default width.

Can the same structural adhesive used for connector bonding also be used for larger structural joints?

EA 9309NA is a multi-substrate structural paste, so it can be used across a range of joint types, but a connector or bracket bonding application generally has different load requirements than a primary structural joint like a wing skin bond. The joint's actual load path and qualification requirements should drive material selection rather than assuming one adhesive fits every bonding job on the harness.

Are these products qualified to specific aerospace specifications?

Qualification varies by product and grade. Current certification status and any platform-specific approvals should be confirmed for the exact grade in question before specifying it on a program. Contact the technical team for documentation.

Do you provide support for wire harness material selection?

Yes. The Krayden technical team works directly with engineers and MRO teams on insulating tape and bonding material selection, datasheets, and application support for new production and repair work.

Need Help Selecting Wire Harness Materials?

Selection depends on the temperature exposure, substrate combination, and whether the material is permanent or a removable process aid. The Krayden technical team provides material selection support, datasheets, and application guidance across insulating tapes and bonding adhesives.
