Product Description

MOLYKOTE® D-96 Anti-Friction Coating is a transparent, water-based, air-curing dry-film lubricant developed to control squeak and friction at low-load automotive interior interfaces. The PTFE-containing coating is intended for slow movements or vibration between combinations such as painted surfaces, plastics, metals, and leather. Apply it to clean, degreased surfaces by spray, dip-spinning, or brushing at a recommended dry-film thickness of 5–20 µm. At 23°C, the wet film is touch-dry after approximately 10 minutes and fully cured after 120 minutes; hot air at 60–80°C can reduce touch-dry time to about 2 minutes. The cured film has a documented service range of -40°C to 150°C. VDA 230-206 testing reported no noise for the listed material pairings under the stated test conditions, including a 100,000-cycle durability test for PVC foil against PC-ABS.

Key features

  • Water-based transparent coating: Supports friction and noise control while retaining a transparent finish.
  • Controlled thin-film application: Recommended dry-film thickness of 5–20 µm using spray, dip-spinning, or brush application.
  • Air-curing process: Touch-dry in about 10 minutes at 23°C and fully cured in 120 minutes; hot air at 60–80°C can reduce touch-dry time to about 2 minutes.
  • Anti-noise test evidence: VDA 230-206 testing reported no noise for multiple painted-surface, plastic, and leather pairings under the documented conditions.
  • Temperature and emissions data: Documented -40°C to 150°C service range and 0 ppm NMP in VDA 278 thermal-desorption testing.

Additional Information

Water-based air-curing anti-squeak coating

MOLYKOTE® D-96 Anti-Friction Coating

A transparent PTFE-containing dry-film lubricant for controlling squeak and friction in low-load automotive interior contacts. The water-based coating can be sprayed, dip-spun, or brushed onto clean surfaces, then air-cured to provide a thin film for painted-surface, plastic, metal, and leather pairings exposed to slow movement or vibration.

Application process

Surface preparation, application, and cure

A clean surface, thorough agitation, controlled film build, and sufficient drying time are central to repeatable performance. MOLYKOTE® D-96 is ready to spray and can also be applied by dip-spinning or brushing.

Prepare: Clean and degrease the surface before coating.
Apply: Stir thoroughly, then spray, dip-spin, or brush to a recommended 5–20 µm dry-film thickness.
Dry and cure: Touch-dry after about 10 minutes at 23°C and fully cured after 120 minutes. Hot air at 60–80°C can reduce touch-dry time to about 2 minutes.

Stage 1
Clean and degrease
Remove oils, mold release, dust, and other contamination that may interfere with coating wetting or adhesion.
Stage 2
Mix and apply
Stir thoroughly and control the applied quantity to achieve a 5–20 µm dry film by spray, dip-spinning, or brushing.
Stage 3
Dry to handling strength
Allow about 10 minutes at 23°C before handling, or use 60–80°C hot air for an approximately 2-minute touch-dry cycle.
Stage 4
Complete cure and maintain equipment
Allow 120 minutes at 23°C before full loading. Adjust viscosity with distilled or tap water; clean equipment with water or up to 20% DPM or TPM in water.
Storage and handling

Store in the original unopened container at 23°C. The documented usable life is 12 months from the date of production. Review the current safety data and container label before handling, and provide suitable ventilation and eye protection for spray or mist-generating operations.

Performance evidence

Anti-noise and friction performance

The supplier data provide material-pair-specific anti-noise and friction results. These results support evaluation of the listed automotive interior combinations but should not be generalized to untested materials, surface finishes, geometries, loads, temperatures, or vibration profiles.

Anti-noise screening
No noise reported
VDA 230-206 results for eight listed material pairings at 23°C, 40% RH, 2 mm/s, and loads from 2 to 30 N.
Durability evidence
100,000 cycles
No noise reported for 1 mm PVC foil against PC-ABS at 20 N under the stated VDA 230-206 durability conditions.
Service-temperature range
-40°C to 150°C
Documented range for the cured dry film; friction and noise behavior remains application-specific.

All values are typical condition-specific test results, not guaranteed specifications. A low coefficient of friction or a no-noise result in these tests does not establish universal noise elimination, system efficiency, or performance for other material grades and assemblies.

Applications

Automotive interior anti-squeak applications

MOLYKOTE® D-96 is intended for low-load interfaces exposed to slow movement or vibration, particularly where a transparent coating is preferred to a visible lubricant or felt-tape solution.
