Product Description

MOLYKOTE® D-708 Anti-Friction Coating is a black, heat-curing dry-film lubricant for low- to medium-load metal-to-metal and metal-to-plastic interfaces. The PTFE-filled organic binder and solvent system can be spray- or dip-applied after cleaning and degreasing, at a recommended 5–15 µm film thickness, then cured for 60 minutes at 180°C or 20 minutes at 200°C. The cured film operates from -60°C to 240°C and provides a glossy black surface. Typical performance includes a 0.11 coefficient of friction in an internal 50-cycle polymer test, 1,220 N ASTM D2625 Falex pressure resistance, and more than 700 hours of salt-spray resistance for an 11 µm coating over zinc phosphate. Documented uses include safety-belt components, transmission parts, and door locks.

MOLYKOTE® D-708 Anti-Friction Coating

A solvent-borne anti-friction coating for low- to medium-load metal-to-metal and metal-to-plastic interfaces. The PTFE solid-lubricant and organic-binder system supports spray or dip application of a controlled thin film, followed by heat cure to create a glossy black lubricating and corrosion-protective surface for automotive and mechanical components.

Application process

Prepare, coat, and heat cure a controlled thin film

Coating performance depends on surface cleanliness, pretreatment, uniform film build, and a verified cure. Establish process controls using representative components, equipment, and production conditions before fixing the application specification.

Surface preparation: Clean and degrease metal surfaces before application. Zinc-phosphate pretreatment is the substrate condition used for the published salt-spray result.
Application method: Stir well, then apply by spray or dip coating. Adjust application viscosity with methyl ethyl ketone only under the controls required by the current safety information and site procedures.
Target film thickness: Apply a recommended 5–15 µm coating and control the cured film against dimensional and surface-finish requirements.

 

Application sequence and process controls

Stage 1
Clean and prepare
Remove oil, grease, and other contamination from the component. Establish and validate the selected pretreatment, including zinc phosphate where corrosion performance is required.
Stage 2
Mix and apply
Stir the coating thoroughly and apply by spray or dip. Use controlled viscosity, withdrawal or spray settings, and part orientation to obtain uniform coverage.
Stage 3
Control film build
Target a 5–15 µm cured coating. At 10 µm thickness, the documented theoretical coverage is 60 ft²/lb before application losses.
Stage 4
Heat cure and verify
Use 60 minutes at 180°C or 20 minutes at 200°C as documented cure options. Confirm the actual schedule on production-representative parts and ovens.
Storage and handling

Shelf life is 6 months in the original sealed container when stored above -18°C (0°F). The as-supplied coating is highly flammable and has a documented closed-cup flash point of approximately 0°C; review the current safety data and use the required ventilation, ignition-control, grounding, bonding, and personal-protection measures.
