Product Description

MOLYKOTE® D-10-GBL Anti-Friction Coating is a gray-black, heat-curing graphite dry-film lubricant for metal-to-metal friction contacts exposed to motor oils, grease, gasoline, diesel, or solvents. The highly viscous coating is formulated for screen printing and may also be sprayed or brushed after viscosity adjustment with gamma-butyrolactone. Recommended processing uses a 15–20 µm dry film, a 10-minute solvent flash-off at 80°C, and a typical 20-minute cure at 200°C object temperature. The cured film has a documented -40°C to 340°C service range and condition-specific Falex and SRV performance data. Applications include engine pistons, compressors, piston pumps, and pneumatic or hydraulic systems.

MOLYKOTE® D-10-GBL Anti-Friction Coating

A highly viscous, solvent-borne anti-friction coating for prepared metal-to-metal contacts exposed to lubricants, fuels, or solvents. The graphite and organic-binder system supports screen printing of a controlled thin film, followed by solvent flash-off and heat cure for piston, pump, compressor, pneumatic, and hydraulic applications.

Application process

Prepare, apply, flash off, and heat cure the coating

A controlled surface and cure process is central to coating performance. Clean the substrate, select the pretreatment and application method, maintain the target dry-film thickness, and verify the actual cure on representative production parts.

Surface preparation: Thoroughly clean and degrease the metal surface. Manganese phosphating or 180-grit sandblasting may improve adhesion and coating service life.
Application thickness: Stir thoroughly and target a 15–20 µm dry film. Screen printing is the primary documented method.
Alternative application: Spraying or brushing may be used after adjusting viscosity with gamma-butyrolactone to suit the selected process.

 

Application sequence and process controls

Stage 1
Clean and pretreat
Remove oil, grease, and other contaminants. Use manganese phosphating or 180-grit sandblasting when the application requires enhanced adhesion and service life.
Stage 2
Mix and apply
Stir the coating thoroughly. Apply by screen printing to a recommended 15–20 µm dry-film thickness; spray or brush application requires suitable viscosity adjustment.
Stage 3
Flash off solvent
Before high-temperature cure, use the documented 10-minute flash-off at 80°C (176°F).
Stage 4
Heat cure and validate
A typical schedule is 20 minutes at 200°C (392°F) object temperature. Confirm actual cure for the substrate, part mass, film thickness, and oven design before fixing process specifications.
Storage and handling

Store the original unopened container at or below 23°C (73°F) in a cool, dark location and avoid direct sunlight. Usable life is 12 months from production under these conditions. Review the current safety data and container label before handling, dilution, application, flash-off, or cure.

The coating is used where a thin, cured graphite film can be integrated into the component manufacturing process. Confirm substrate pretreatment, film thickness, cure, dimensional tolerance, operating fluid, contact pressure, speed, and duty cycle on the actual assembly.
