Product Description

DOWSIL™ 93-104 Ablative Material Kit is a two-part silicone elastomer formulated to provide thermal protection in severe flame, heat-flux, and high-shear environments. The material forms a tough, tenacious, and durable surface char when exposed to extreme heat and can be cured at room temperature or with accelerated heat. It is trowel-applied or moldable and is designed for protecting launch equipment exposed directly to rocket blasts and external surfaces subjected to atmospheric friction at hypersonic speeds.

DOWSIL™ 93-104 Silicone Ablative

A two-part, addition-cure silicone elastomer for direct rocket-blast protection and external hypersonic heat shielding. It forms a tough, tenacious char, supports room-temperature or accelerated heat cure, and can be brushed, rolled, troweled, or molded for horizontal applications. Processing

Surface preparation, application, and cure

Prepare and clean the substrate before applying DOWSIL™ 93-104 to a validated target thickness. Cure can proceed at room temperature or be accelerated with heat. Final process details and thickness must be qualified for the specific fuel, flame-impingement location, geometry, and protection requirement.

Surface condition: Remove dust, loose material, residual char, oil, grease, and other contaminants that could interfere with cure or adhesion.
Application: Apply manually by brush, roll, or trowel on horizontal surfaces, or mold the material into custom parts and shapes.
Thickness validation: Establish application thickness through field testing; required thickness varies with the ablative configuration, fuel type, and distance from flame impingement.

Recommended process sequence

Clean and prepare the surface
Remove dust, loose material, residual char, oil, grease, and other contaminants. Power washing with water can provide cleaning and surface abrasion; use an appropriate cleaning method for the substrate and contamination.

Apply DOWSIL™ 93-104 to the validated thickness
Brush, roll, or trowel the material onto a horizontal surface, or mold it into the required part geometry. Avoid transferring an application thickness from a different fuel, flame location, or structure without validation.

Cure, inspect, and reapply as needed
Heat is not required for cure. At room temperature, full cure typically takes 24 to 48 hours depending on applied thickness; heat can significantly accelerate cure. Before reapplication, remove residual char and loose material, then clean and prepare the surface for fresh DOWSIL™ 93-104.

Flame-exposure results apply to a 4.8 mm coating on ceramic tile exposed to 3500°C. Adhesion-profile values are reported in pounds per linear inch for bare and primed steel and concrete.
